As the newsletter “editor” I am going to abuse my power and brag for a
moment. (It’s OK, Randy told me
to!) On January 15th one of
our Boer does had quintuplets. Each was
born weighing between 6.5# and 9/5#, 38# of goats total. There are four bucks and one doe. The mother, Sassy, is a 4 year old Boer cross
doe that we bought from a herd of range goats in Texas. In the past she has had twins, we had no idea
she was going to be so prolific this time.
In fact, after she had the first two we assumed she was done. Imagine our surprise when we went out later
and there were three more there! She did
all of the birthing herself, no assistance required, and did a very good job of
cleaning them all off. We have left the
three smallest ones on her to nurse, the other two are
in their own pen being bottle fed sheep/goat milk replacer. Each one eats 8-10 ounces, three times a
day. Last year we had one set of
triplets from a different doe, otherwise we’ve always had twins and single
births. Not sure, but there must have
been “something in the air” the night they were made!
